The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting for a Transportation Planner. This position is responsible for performing professional-level tasks that support MDT's State Highway Traffic Safety Section within the Transit, Safety and Planning Bureau. This position will serve as the Law Enforcement Program Manager that supports state and local law enforcement agencies in high crash areas that mitigate impaired driving and speeding and that increase occupant protection enforcement efforts. It provides technical and administrative guidance to law enforcement grantees throughout Montana to enhance state highway traffic safety. Tasks include researching compliance with federal and state laws for plans, programs, and projects; research, analysis, and interpretation of federal and state laws, guidelines, and agency policies and procedures; analyzing transportation-related data; program and project development, grant management, tracking, monitoring, and documenting; performing analysis using a variety of data sources; conducting planning studies; inter-agency and external coordination; and performing a variety of other duties as assigned. Incumbent may serve as a lead employee of various projects. This position reports to the State Highway Traffic Safety Supervisor and does not supervise and does not directly supervise others.

Required Education and Experience:

Planner II - $31.24/hr

  • Associate’s Degree in Planning, Business or a related field.

Planner III - $33.86/hr

  • Associate’s Degree in Planning, Business or a related field, and one (1) year of related work experience.

Planner IV – $35.72/hr

  • Bachelor’s Degree in the following areas: Planning, Business Administration, or a related field. 

Planner V – $38.79/hr

  • Bachelor’s Degree in the following areas: Planning, Business Administration, or a related field, and one (1) year of related work experience. 

 Alternative qualifications include: Any combination of additional related work experience and education equivalent to the minimum qualifications.

Other Information:

House Bill 13, passed by the 2025 State Legislature, increased state employee base pay for by $1.00 per hour or 2.5%, whichever is greater, beginning July 1, 2025. The advertised pay rate includes this increase.

Driver’s record will be verified. Successful applicants will be required to sign a release form which authorizes the Department to obtain the applicant’s permanent driving records. Compliance with Mont. Admin. R. 2.6.201, "State Vehicle Use," and MDT Policy #6.03.001, "State Vehicle Use Policy" are conditions of employment.
