The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) has a career opportunity within the HCFD/MMHNCC as a Custodian.
Job Overview: The Custodian is responsible for the cleaning of the building, equipment, and furnishings to maintain a clean, comfortable and home-like environment for residents with mental disorders. This includes mopping, scrubbing and sanitizing resident rooms and common areas of the facility.

Physical and Environmental Demands:
The work requires pulling and pushing large heavy carts, wet laundry, lifting bundles up to 50 pounds and ability to withstand walking and standing on concrete floors for extended periods of time. Must be able to tolerate heat and humidity, and continual noises from equipment and machinery. Risk of exposure to blood and body fluids, diseases, and unpleasant odors and sights. Frequent contact with adult psychiatric residents who may be verbally or physically assaultive.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Behaviors):
Required for the first day of work:
• Knowledge of basic laundry procedures such as water temperature for different fabrics, detergents and cleaning agents for different types of soil, and customary folding techniques.
• Skill in operating commercial washers and dryers, and labeling machine.
• Skill in basic mending.
• Ability to read instructions.
• Ability to organize work and meet deadlines.
• Ability to follow oral and written directions.
Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):
· Six months’ experience in commercial washers and dryers.
- Other combinations of education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

This position may be eligible for a statutory $1.00 an hour base pay increase effective July 1, 2026.
