Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

  • The position requires education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’ degree in Geography/GIS, Computer Science, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a similar academic field.
  • Five (5) years progressive experience in a related profession.
  • Other combinations of education and professional experience may be considered.   

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  

  • Professional knowledge and experience with a wide breadth of natural resource spatial data. 
  • Extensive knowledge of statistics and experience working independently on complex statistical problems (e.g. hypothesis testing, experimental design, econometrics, optimization, forest biometrics, forest modeling, sampling design, estimation).  
  • Experience with web development - position will generate inventory sampling outputs which can be accessed or consumed from web pages. 
  • Experience with utilization and administration of ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcSDE for SQL Server, Q-GIS, and the ability to learn and utilize Google Earth Engine.
  • Experience with data modeling principles and scripting languages, particularly Python.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including ability to communicate program requirements to diverse levels of management and customers. 
  • Strong aptitude for learning new skills, adapting to new technologies, and implementing new methodologies. 
  • Knowledge of natural resource management concepts and strategies.
  • Drone pilots license, or willingness to obtain.
  • Ability to build consensus among a group of varying stakeholders. 
  • Knowledge and experience with project management principles and best practices. 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects under tight timelines. 
  • Ability to work both independently and effectively as a member of a team.

Special Information:  Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States.  A valid driver's license is required with less than 12 conviction points in the most recent completed 36 months. 

Eligibility to Work: In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act, the person selected must produce within three days of hire documents that show authorization to work in the United States. Examples of such documentation include a birth certificate or Social Security card along with a driver’s license or other picture I.D., or a U.S. passport, or a "green card".  The State of Montana does not sponsor.
