Special Information:

The Fisheries Division develops programs and budgets to manage for aquatic resources. The Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Bureau is managed and coordinated by staff within the Department headquarters. Implementation of programs are accomplished by the AIS bureau chief and respective AIS coordinators. The Equipment Manager position serves as the statewide resource for all prevention equipment and assists the AIS Area Supervisors, Prevention Specialist and the AIS Prevention Coordinator in carrying out specified AIS equipment maintenance and repair.

 

Identity of applicants who become finalists may be releases to the public if the Department deems it necessary. Employees who exceed 1,040 hours in a calendar year are also provided health, dental and life insurance. Other benefits include retirement, paid vacation, sick and holidays. This position may be covered by a VEBA (Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association).

Telework (if applicable):

 

You must reside in Montana (or move to Montana) to accept this position. In this position you will be afforded the opportunity to telework, however there will be required weekly in-office day(s) in Helena.  Specific conditions will be outlined as part of the job offer and must adhere to state policy.

 

Specific Job Information:

The incumbent will perform general preventive/routine maintenance and repairs on all AIS equipment in accordance with FWP procedures, operation manuals, and manufacturer's specifications. Minor facility repairs and maintenance including but not limited to buildings, electrical, solar systems, and heating. Must be responsible, dependable, work as part of a team, and follow protocols and direction given by supervisor. Applicants should be able to communicate effectively, work independently and self-motivate, but also collaboratively as a team member. Must conduct themselves professionally with the public, co-workers, and supervisor. Position requires working for long periods in various extreme weather conditions. Responsible for conducting preventative and routine maintenance, physical repairs, fabrication, electronic equipment installation and maintenance, and administrative duties. Expected to troubleshoot and problem solve issues with mechanics, data tablets, and basic station operations. Expected to maintain a professional demeanor and use critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Applicants are required to be on time and present for all scheduled shifts, submit their time for payroll, and are responsible for the organization of their workplace. Use common sense regarding safely operating machinery, driving state vehicles, and conducting daily operations.

 

Physical and Environmental Demands:

This position is physically demanding due to lifting, working in restrictive areas and awkward positions, standing extended periods of time and working in adverse weather conditions. Travel is required to recover/deliver and possibly maintain/repair equipment throughout the state and may include overnight stays. On-call availability may be required. The Equipment Manager will work in the equipment yard in Helena and has access to limited facilities. Work in often done in inclement weather and on short notice. On occasion, this position will require travel to work out of town, with possible overnight stays. The Equipment Manager will frequently work without an onsite supervisor. This position primarily runs year-round but may vary depending on weather conditions and access to equipment during the winter months. During this time period work will be administrative for planning and ordering of parts and preparation for the new field season. Schedule will vary and may include weekends, evenings, and holidays. The Equipment Manager is responsible for transportation to the equipment yard in Helena but will be provided with a vehicle for out-of-town travel.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

This position supervises and works with a variety of individuals, partners, and agencies, of varying backgrounds and is expected to build strong relationships. Applicant should have a desire to continually grow and learn. Knowledge of and experience with computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and data storage. This position requires good organizational and time management skills, and excellent written and verbal communication. Applicants should be able to learn and apply new information quickly. Experience in small engines, plumbing, electrical, trailers, boats, and more are needed to be successful in this position.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

The minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through the combination of a high school or vocational school education in a skilled craft, and relevant skilled work experience in equipment maintenance, electrical systems and repairs, small engine repair, welding, and solar power systems.  Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
