Special Information:
This position assists the recreation manager and recreation ranger at state parks, and fishing access sites, within defined geographic areas in FWP Region 2 (west-central Montana). This requires planning for and working at various recreation sites within the Bitterroot District. The recreation technician may work and travel in some instances in poor weather and travel conditions. Patrols can require extended periods of driving park trucks. This position will require a willingness to work periodically during irregular hours, weekends, and holidays. The position is a 32-hour work week, full-time permanent positions within Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks, Parks and Outdoor Recreation Division. This position will be based at Travelers' Rest State Park in Lalo
(about 8 miles south of Missoula) located in the beautiful Bitterroot Valley. Montana Fish Wildlife and Park lands in the Bitterroot are approximately twenty Fishing Access Sites and three State Parks, including one National Historic Landmark and one National Register site. Travelers' Rest State Park includes a visitor center.
This is a seasonal worker position with an anticipated season usually lasting mid-May through late September. Start and end dates can be weather dependent. The schedule for these positions will be full time daily with midweeks off as weekend staffing is required. Weekend, evening, and holiday work is required. The incumbents will be expected to work independently, often doing physical labor in adverse weather conditions. Good physical condition is essential.
This position is based out of Travelers' Rest State Park in Lolo, Montana, just south of Missoula. Work will be throughout the Bitterroot Valley including Painted Rocks State Park, Fort Owen State Park and fishing access sites along the Bitterroot River.
Job Duties:
The Recreation Technician is a frontline position that provides general operational support of a variety of recreational offerings at state parks, fishing access sites, and along river corridors. Duties include monitoring recreation sites by foot or vehicle, maintaining extensive public contact, assisting with interpretive and educational programs, collecting and processing fees and visitation data, assisting with the web-based reservation system, occasional front desk shifts at the visitor center and carrying out light-duty maintenance duties.
Graduation from high school or equivalent education. One year of college or vocational training experience in park and recreation management, interpretive visitor center, or closely related setting is preferred; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required at time of application: General knowledge of basic customer service and safe work habits Ability to: educate and inform visitors on compliance with rules and regulations and State laws; collect fees and make change; sell merchandise and account for monies collected; read, maintain, and prepare records and reports; and assist visitors in emergency situations. Daily interaction with site visitors requires effective communication and public relations skills.
