This position may be eligible for a statutory $1.00 an hour base pay increase effective on July 1, 2026.

This position is for someone who loves traveling Montana! The successful candidate will be assigned a work area close to their living location to travel to locations where the work is assigned.
As a Multi-Discipline Building Code Inspector, you will:
- Conduct inspections for compliance with adopted Codes, Administrative Rules and MCA (Montana Code Annotated, a.k.a. State law).
- Investigate complaints and conduct investigations.
- Perform administrative duties including on site plan review and field issuing permits.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
The successful candidate will be placed into our 4-level career ladder based on their existing experience and qualifications. - Inspector Level 1 ($29.85): Entry level requires 6 months of experience or an associate degree in a construction related fields.
- Inspector Level 2 ($31.19): Achieve this level with a single discipline certification defined within building codes ladder.
- Inspector Level 3 ($33.68): Reach this level with two disciplines within the building codes career ladder breakdown.
- Inspector Level 4 ($36.16): The highest level is reached by achieving full certification across all applicable building code disciplines.
The ideal candidate will possess the ability to learn building codes and a demonstrated ability to apply those codes effectively in the field. This role requires not only technical expertise but also interpersonal skills to navigate complex interactions with homeowners, contractors, and other stakeholders.

- The successful candidate must be able to develop and maintain positive relationships with all stakeholders and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Technical Knowledge and Abilities:
- Ability to gain knowledge of state-adopted building codes, rules, laws, and policies applicable to the position is required.
- The ability to present technical information in a clear and understandable way is essential for educating stakeholders and ensuring compliance.
- Candidates must be able to manage their work schedules with minimal oversight and meet deadlines consistently.
- The ability to identify complex problems, review related information, and evaluate and recommend options, with a strong emphasis on life safety, is crucial.
The ability to interpret and apply information from blueprints, schematics and technical drawings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates with a strong mix of the attributes listed in the above Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) are desired. Candidates may demonstrate competency in the KSAs through experience, formal education (including certificates, credentials, or degree-based programs), or a combination of both. Candidates may demonstrate competency in the KSAs through at least 6 months of experience, formal education (including certificates, credentials, or degree-based programs), or a combination of the two. Candidates should clearly describe how their experience and education meets the identified KSAs and provide examples in their cover letter that demonstrate their qualifications.
Any combination of equivalent experience and education to successfully perform the essential functions of the position will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications included the following certifications:
- ICC IBC Building Inspector Certification and ICC IBC Plan Review Certification, or degree in architecture or engineering related field
- Montana master or journeyman electrical license, or
- ICC E1 (residential) and ICC E2 (commercial) certification.
- Montana Master or Journeyman Plumbing license (can also perform fuel gas and mechanical code inspections, or;
- IAPMO Uniform Plumbing Code International Fuel Gas Code and International Mechanical Code Certification.
OR
- Any combination of equivalent experience and education to successfully perform the essential functions of the position will be considered.
