JOB DUTIES:

As an Economist, you will:

  • Conduct research and analysis of labor market and economic data for the purpose of improving internal processes and informing economic development policy within Montana.
  • Be a technical expert on economic and workforce data, presenting information to a variety of audiences including lawmakers, stakeholders in workforce development, agency staff, and the public through written reports and presentations.
  • Assist leadership to develop consistent data-gathering and reporting systems, aiding in policy implementation and execution.
  • Create processes to disseminate analytics through automated reporting systems and the production of interactive visualizations.
  • Work with members of a team to ensure a high-quality work product, including review of other’s work and responding positively to suggestions from team members.
  • Manage multiple projects and priorities under inflexible timelines, working within the department, across state agencies, and with external stakeholders.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITES:

If you are the right person for this opportunity, you will have the following knowledge, skills or abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of macro and microeconomics; advanced statistical analysis, regression and economic modeling techniques; professional research methods; data system processes.
  • Skill in interpreting interrelated data and statistics, research tools and techniques, and translating technical information to varied audiences verbally and in writing.
  • Skill in determining customer need and project scope to fulfill uncertain technical assistance needs.
  • Experience manipulating, cleaning, and merging large datasets for analysis, using tools such as SAS, R, or other programs. Experience with SQL or Snowflake is a plus.
  • Experience in data visualization software, such as Tableau, is encouraged.
  • Ability to generate clear and concise communications while exercising diplomacy and sensitivity on confidential, controversial, or otherwise sensitive issues.
  • Ability to continuously learn new skills and methods.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Your preparation for this opportunity could include a combination of relevant experiences including:

  • Master’s degree in economics, statistics, data analytics, management, or another related field. Alternative qualifications of a bachelor’s degree with successful completion of graduate-level econometrics coursework or certification in data analysis and regression techniques will be considered with work experience demonstrating statistical research.
  • Experience working in SAS, R, or other statistical software is required.
  • Experience with Tableau, SQL and Snowflake is not required, but desirable.

  • Any combination of equivalent experience and education to successfully perform the essential functions of the position will be considered.
