The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) has a career opportunity within Montana State Hospital.

 

The CMS Compliance Specialist investigates all-level patient-related complaints, grievances, and allegations of abuse and neglect. This position is a member of the Quality Improvement Department. This position reviews federal and state regulations specifically related to health care services to evaluate the nature of violations, organizational-wide state of compliance, and actions to be taken for improvements. This position conducts root cause analysis and facilitates the department managers and directors with the plan of corrections to address timely resolutions, violation preventions, and improvement efforts.

Qualifications for this Career Opportunity

 

  • Extensive knowledge of CMS and Joint Commission regulations, specifically portions applicable to patient rights and grievances.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare regulatory requirements and industry practices.
  • Strong working knowledge and understanding of state and federal requirements affecting acute psychiatric facilities.
  • Ability to manage patient complaint grievance program consistent with established regulations and policies.
  • Strong working knowledge with developing and implementing improvement activities.
  • Strong skills in active listening, communicating both verbally and in writing, investigative techniques, reading comprehension, public speaking, report writing, and critical thinking/inductive reasoning.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects.
  • Strong computer knowledge and ability to utilize typical office programs such as Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

  • Bachelor degree in Healthcare, Public Health, or Community Services related field.
    • Recent relevant (within 3 years) experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.
  • 3 years work experience within healthcare regulations/implementation, compliance and patient satisfaction/grievances required.
  • Patient Safety certificate or credential from nationally accredited organization preferred.
  • Experience working directly with patient advocacy issues within the past 2 years preferred.
  • Experience with developing and conducting training related to grievances or investigations preferred.
  • Other combinations of education, experience, or credentials may be considered on a case by case basis.
